Travel to/from Costa Rica
Transport (i.e. airfare, bus, etc.) to and from Costa Rica is not included in the course fees. You are welcome to utilize any method of ticket purchase (i.e. personal travel agent, frequent flyer mileage etc.), but please consult our travel page first.
Arrival Information
Transportation to and from San Jose International Airport is included within the standard course tuition as long as the students arrive/depart on the scheduled dates. Each participant will have submitted his or her detailed flight itinerary at least 15 days before arrival to ensure that the CRROBS staff person may coordinate a proper greeting. Preferably, it’s more comfortable for arriving students to land in San Jose between 10am and 8pm; however, on arrival days CRROBS will accommodate any arrival time if necessary.
Please note the following protocol for arrival days:
When you are aware of a flight delay, missed flight or any other factor that affects the anticipated arrival time, please call: 1-800-676-2018, 1-877-531-2037, 011-506-2-278-6062, 011-506-2-278-6058 or 011-506-8-888-1981. If you encounter any problems reaching us at these numbers, please see our Contact Page for additional contact information.

Please try to provide specific information which will help us track the flight and adjust the meeting coordination (i.e. which leg of the flight was delayed, any new flight numbers, expected arrival times, etc). During Fly Ins an actual person will be available to speak to until the last student has arrived, regardless of the hour.
When you arrive in Costa Rica follow the signs to Immigration/Baggage Claim/Customs. Wait in line at Immigration with your passport ready. Once you pass through you will go down the escalator that brings you to baggage claim. Look for your baggage and head to customs. Put any luggage onto the x-ray machine at customs and hand the Customs Agent your custom forms that you filled out on the airplane. Once you pass through customs you will see the exit doors.
San Jose International airport is very small and has only one exit. Once you exit the first set of automatic doors you can either turn left or right. Turn LEFT and pass the official Airport Taxi window, where you will see a crowd of people. Before you enter this crowd look for our “Costa Rica Outward Bound” sign – we are there. We will be wearing black polo t-shirts with the Outward Bound logo on one side and “STAFF” written on the other. If you are accompanied by airline staff please let them know this information. Once you see the Outward Bound staff person please identify yourself to them. They will then call the Outward Bound base to notify any contact back home of your safe arrival.
As students are greeted, they are transferred by the CRROBS driver to a CRROBS post where they will begin meeting their course mates. Once the last student has arrived, the instructor will conduct the orientation and will facilitate the group and personal gear organization. Please note: students arriving late may miss the orientation. The next day students will have an early start to begin their journey.
All wallets, passports, return tickets, and other valuables will be locked and stored in our San Jose base to be redistributed to the students the night prior to flying out.
CRROBS can accommodate early departures on the final or fly-out day (the last day of the course as it appears on the course schedule), and we typically do three airport transfers on that day: an early morning, midday and afternoon shuttle.
CRROBS is not able to accommodate students who would like to spend extra time on our base before or after a course, but we are more than happy to assist you in making arrangements for those situations where flight dates dictate extra time in the country.

If You Lose Your Luggage
If you arrive and your luggage does not – relax – and go to your airline’s stand in the baggage claim area. They will fill out your information and you will give them the phone number to our office 2-278-6062 so that they can notify us when your luggage arrives. Make sure to hold onto your luggage tags (they will stick them onto the envelope they give you to hold your boarding passes/plane tickets in). When packing, put your most important belongings in your carry-on in the event that this could happen. You will want to start course with or without your luggage!
Travel in Costa Rica
All land transfers during the course are included in tuition and fees. To increase intercultural contact and communication, we usually use public transportation, including buses and ferries. In extremely remote areas, we charter transportation or use our own.
