In order to make your enrollment process a smooth one we have added an FAQ
section. Feel free to email us at customcourse@crrobs.org
with any more…
Do any of the airlines offer GS special rates or is one carrier
better to come into San Jose?
Check out STA travel 1-877-777-8717 and be sure to tell them you are a Girl
Scout attending a course with the Costa Rica Rainforest Outward Bound School.
Does GSUSA have any stipulations or requirements regarding age when
traveling to a Destination?
GSUSA doen't have any requirements, but check into your airline's "Unaccompanied
Minor" policy regarding the age requirements for flying.
Should we consider paying the extra $150.00 round trip for unaccompanied
minor status due to flights being canceled at the discretion of National security?
We can not make suggestions as to the type of ticket you wish to buy. However,
peace of mind goes a long way -- if you feel that there is a reason to be concerned,
then the answer is yes. FYI - We have yet to have any issues with flight cancellation
regarding national security and we have few students fly with a chaperon.
Can you travel to Costa Rica with a birth certificate or should we apply for
a passport?
As of November 2003, Costa Rica requires everyone entering the country to have
a current passport that has MORE than 6 months until the expiration date.
Will we need to apply for VISA?
No.
There is no mention of bringing a hiking backpack or sleeping bag,
do we need one?
CRROBS supplies food, sleeping bags and shelter. You are only expected to bring
the personal gear listed on the packing list.
For Rainforest, River and Reef Destination, should she just
bring a duffle bag?
It is recommended that the Girl Scouts bring a duffle to pack their clothes
and personal gear because it allows for the most room and is easily compressible
when not filled. On the night of arrival to our base camp, each Girl Scout
will transfer what is needed for her course to a backpack provided by CRROBS.
I was wondering if there are any other girls going from the "----------"
area, so my daughter isn't alone while waiting in Miami? If
not, are there extra precautions you can suggest we use?
Geographic information for each of the Girl Scouts will be provided in a participant
list that will be sent out in late spring. You will be able to contact
other Girl Scouts by e-mail with this list. In addition, you may ask your
airline to supply a chaperon for your daughter. This is approximately
an expense of $70.00 for each flight. Please contact your specific airline
for more information on chaperones.
My daughter has never surfed before. Do you think she should rent a
board, or as a beginner is she ok with the one provided? What do most girls
do & what do you suggest?
Girls are welcome to bring their own surf boards, and those who don't own one,
can rent one from us.
What about immunizations? What does my daughter need to get?
CRROBS only requires an updated tetanus shot (shot within the last 10 years),
but some people choose to receive vaccinations or inoculations for Hepatitis
A and B, Malaria, Typhoid, or Rabies. We have never had an instance of
any of these in 15 years of operation.
Please contact your family physician or nearest travel clinic on up-to-date
travel information on Costa Rica. We feel immunization and inoculation
decisions are best made by the Girl Scout and her family with the advice of
a trusted physician. Youcan also check out the website for the Center
of Disease Control, www.cdc.gov/travel
Uniforms? I have been told that girls going on Destinations or
other travel events sponsored by Girl Scouts must wear their uniforms while
traveling. Is this the case?
Girls do NOT need to travel in complete uniform. However, all girls must
wear something that clearly identifies them as a Girl Scout.
