The ultimate adrenaline rush in study abroad—this semester
course is packed with watersports! Whether you are in Nicaragua or
Costa Rica, you will have the time of your life exploring warm water breaks
and catching head-high to double overhead waves time and again. Learn to surf
or improve your existing skills with our experienced instructors. Find secret
breaks on remote spots of the Pacific Coast, and surf from dawn to dusk with
palm trees as your backdrop. Our local instructors will guide you to completely
uncrowded waves on pristine beaches that offer incredible sunsets. Surf the
world renown Witch’s Rock, Avellana, Marbella, Junquial, Popoyo, Maderas,
and many other nearby breaks.
But this is surfing Outward Bound style!
Both in and out of the water you will receive well-rounded surf instruction.
Starting with technique on popping up and riding a wave, you will also come
to understand wave dynamics, lunar phases, coastal ecology, and surfing philosophy.
Your instructors will guide you into becoming a more technically advanced and
environmentally aware surfer. Non-surfing downtime is filled with mind-blowing
activities like fitness routines, capoeira, beach Olympics, service projects,
yoga, first aid and CPR, and there’s always time for a little bit of lounge
time.
Then blast off to Panamá where you will spend even more time in the
water. The islands of Bocas del Toro will be your home while you get SCUBA certified
in crystal clear waters of the Caribbean. Explore this underwater world unique
with it’s multitude of coral reefs and brightly colored tropical fish.
Wakeboard during the day and snorkel at night—there are always stimulating
activities to do, and if the weather is good and there is enough time, you will
jump aboard a catamaran and sail through the island chain.
And if you weren’t already wet enough, you will kayak and raft through
the whitewater rapids of Costa Rica. Learn how to roll, flip, brace, loop, and
surf in the frothy pools of a Class III rapid in your kayak. Then guide your
raft down five of the most sensational rivers in Central America as you learn
river hydrology, rescue techniques, river dynamics, and river ecology. This
is the most exhilarating part of your course, and you’ll definitely get
soaked as you swim down stretches of the rivers surrounded by rainforest waterfalls!
