 Water and Wave Semester: 70 days

Costa Rica Rainforest Element (10-12 days):
• Trek 5-10 miles per day through tropical cloud and rainforests with amazing views
• Learn about rainforest biology, natural history, conservation, backcountry skills, etc
• Group formations: setting up camp, meals, and nightly meetings
• Possible activities include tree canopy climbing and waterfall rappelling
• Continual presence of Costa Rican instructor and bi-lingual lead instructor
• Interactive teaching style (language supplements, verbal and cultural immersion)
• Homestay in Piedras Blancas – a remote Mestizo village nestled deep in primary rainforest.
• Possible Activities: Spanish lessons, solo, community service projects, planting or harvesting traditional foods (bananas, rice, beans, sugar cane, cocoa, avocados, oranges, corn), preparation of traditional foods (milking cows and goats, grinding corn, hand-making tortillas on an open fire), playing soccer with local kids, tree canopy climb, jungle waterfall rappel, medicinal plant hike with local shaman, whitewater raft to your exit area and more!

Costa Rica Surf Element (15-20 days):
• Possible surf locations along North and Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica (locations dependent on weather conditions): Witches Rock, Avellanas, Junquillal, Manuel Antonio, Dominical, Naranjo, Frijolar, Tivives, Escondido, and Hermosa.
• Group visits different beaches to experience a variety of breaks and wave types
• Warm water breaks
• Holistic instructional approach (lunar phases, wave formations, coastal ecology, mangroves)
• If you’ve never surfed before or if you are experienced, this is our skills intensive course which will help you to develop your own abilities to enjoy this extremely fun and physical sport!

Nicaragua Surf Element (10-14 days):
• Surfing along the Pacific Coast, Playa Maderas, Popoyo, Poneloya, Gigante, Pochomil.
• Possible Activities: service project, cimbing Maderas Volcano, exploring Ometepe Island, visit historic city of Granada

Costa Rica River Element (15-20 days):
• 8-10 days whitewater raft captaining course on some of the following rainforest shrouded rivers: Sarapiqui, Reventazon, Pacuare, Pejibaye, Savegre, and General (depending on water levels)

Panama Element (8-10 days):
• Get NAUI Certified for SCUBA Diving
• Snorkel in the warm, crystal waters of the Caribbean
• Learn about reef ecology
• Possible Activities: sea kayaking, biking, wakeboarding, sailing, community service and solo
CERTIFICATIONS
• NAUI (SCUBA Diving)
• First Aid
• CPR
• White water training certification
AVAILABLE COURSE CREDIT
• Coastal Ecology, 3 credits
• Intro to Spanish, 3 credits
• Tropical Natural History of Costa Rica, 3 credits
• Group Leadership, 3 credits
