Semester "Instructor Training" |
| First Phase: Instructor
Training
Number of Days: 60
days
- Wilderness First Responder Course
and Technical Rope Rescue Course (10-15 days):
*Goal is to prepare participants to recognize and
deal with medical and traumatic injuries in a wilderness setting. Focus
is on CR wilderness, but protocols are generally universal.
- American Red Cross/DOT standard curriculum for First Responders
- Additional curriculum focusing on wilderness settings with plenty
of scenarios
- ARC CPR for the professional rescuer with oxygen administration
- 3 day Rescue 3 International Technical Rope Rescue Operations course
- White Water River Guide training
(20-25 days)
*Goal is to prepare participants to be able to guide
a 14-16 foot raft with paddling clients on class III white water rivers
in Costa Rica or abroad.
- 3-4 day Swift Water Rescue Tech or WW Rescue Tech cert (Rescue 3
Intl.)
- 16 day river guide training with chance to certify with IRF
- Focus on mountain style tropical rivers
- Multi-Element
Leadership training (8-10
days)
*Goal is to prepare participants with hard and
soft skills to successfully lead multi element expeditions including
backpacking, camp craft, climbing, rappelling etc.
- Backpack guiding with camp craft leadership
- Expedition planning and execution
- Instructor judgement training
- Working with Adolescent training
- Working with participants using psychotropic medication training
- Safety systems for expeditioning, rappelling, canyoning, climbing
and rescues
- Village homestays and facilitating intercultural exchange
- Costa Rican natural & cultural history for guides
- Soft skills training/group dynamics
- Open water lifeguarding
and SCUBA training (8-10
days)
*Goal is to prepare participants to safely assess
swimming areas and oversee swimming and other aquatic activities for
groups on lakes, oceans and rivers.
- Full certification course with Costa Rican
Lifeguarding Association (CRLA)
- NAUI SCUBA certification course conducted in Bocas del Toro,
Panama
- Rescues using surf equipment in open ocean setting
- Learn basic instruction on how to teach surfing

|
Second Phase: Internship(selected
students only)
Number of Days: 80 days
This phase will be open for students of the Leadership Course to apply for
internships as Lead instructors, Co-instructors or Assistant instructors.
This second phase will include staff training and an opportunity to meet
and learn with other instructors on staff. Marketing, administration and
course logistics are some of the course topics that will be addressed during
this phase. Students that have excelled in the first phase will be strongly
considered for these internships. Although participation in the first phase
of the Leadership Course does not guarantee acceptance in the second phase
of the course it is strongly considered when accepting applicants. The number
of students accepted into the internship phase will depend on the staff
needs relative to course enrollment for the year. |

| Third Phase: Full
Time Instructor(selected
interns only)
Number of Days: Open
This phase will be open for interns to apply for full-time positions as
Lead instructors. Students that have excelled in the first phase and second
phase of the Leadership Course will be strongly considered for these positions.
Although participation in the second phase of the Leadership Course does
not guarantee acceptance in the third phase of the course it is strongly
considered when accepting applicants. |
