Course Description
Leadership Semester itineraries may change with weather and water conditions, but see below for the outline:

Instructor Training
Wilderness First Responder Course and Technical Rope Rescue Course:

This phase prepares students to recognize and handle medical and traumatic injuries in a wilderness setting. Our focus is on the Costa Rica wilderness, but protocols are universal.

• American Red Cross/DOT standard curriculum for First Responders
• Additional curriculum focusing on wilderness settings with plenty of scenarios
• ARC CPR for the professional rescuer with oxygen administration
• 3-day Rescue 3 International Technical Rope Rescue Operations course

Whitewater River Guide Training:
This phase prepares students to guide a 14-16 foot raft with paddling clients on Class III whitewater rivers.

• 3-4 day WW Rescue Tech certification (Rescue 3 International)
• 16-day river guide training with chance to certify with the International Rafting Federation
• Focus on mountain style tropical rivers

Multi-Element Leadership Training:
This phase prepares students with hard and soft skills to successfully lead multi-element expeditions including backpacking, camp craft, climbing, rappelling, etc.

• Backpack guiding with camp craft leadership
• Expedition planning and execution
• Instructor judgment training
• Working with Adolescents training
• Working with participants using psychotropic medication training
• Safety systems for expeditioning, rappelling, canyoning, climbing and rescues
• Village homestays and facilitating intercultural exchange
• Costa Rican natural & cultural history for guides
• Soft skills training/group dynamics

Open Water Lifguarding:
This phase prepares students to safely assess swimming areas and oversee swimming and other aquatic activities for groups on lakes, oceans and rivers.

• Full certification course with Costa Rican Lifeguarding Association (CRLA)
• Rescues using surf equipment in open ocean setting
• Learn basic instruction on how to teach surfing

SCUBA Training:

• NAUI SCUBA certification course conducted in Bocas del Toro, Panama

Second Phase: Internship (selected students only):
After successfully completing the Leadership Semester course, students may apply for 3-month instructor internships with CRROBS. Participation in the Leadership Course does not guarantee acceptance into the internship program. The number of students accepted to the internship phase depends upon the staff needs relative to course enrollment for the year. All interns receive a monthly stipend and may apply for full-time positions as instructors after finishing the 3-month internship.

Arrival Information:
After arriving at San Jose International Airport you will be met by Outward Bound staff and transferred to our base, located in the rainforest 15 miles east of the Costa Rican capital, San Jose. On base, you will meet your instructors and be outfitted with a backpack and gear to get ready for your adventure. You will eat and sleep on base before departing to begin your course.
