Course Description
Catching Waves itineraries may change with weather and water conditions, but here are the basics:

Playa Avellanas:
You will based out of a campsite at Playa Avellanas, a pristine, tropical beach on the Nicoya Peninsula. Your group will work as a team to set up tents and prepare meals. Avellanas has a good beginner break with a sandy bottom and a lot of safe whitewash. Further north of the beach there is an A-Frame (breaks both left and right) reef break at a river mouth which breaks over a shelf and picks up more than the beach break.

You will also experience different beaches and surf breaks through possible day trips to Playa Tamarindo, Playa Negra, and Playa Junquillal.

Surf Activities:
All surf instruction is supervised and coached by international surf instructors. Topics covered in surf instruction include:
  • Surfboard handling and safety
  • Paddling techniques – through the break and onto waves
  • How to read/catch waves – timing, judgment and positioning
  • Take off – board braking away and standing action
  • Trimming – sliding, traversing, tube riding and nose riding
  • Turning – forehand, backhand, and cutback
  • Ocean awareness and rescue activities
Non-Surf Activities:
When you are not in the water, your instructor may choose to lead any of the following activities:
  • Catching and cooking your own fish
  • Strength and stamina building activities such as yoga, jogging, soccer, volleyball, or "beach Olympics"v
  • Tide pool exploration
  • Mangrove exploration
  • Day hikes
  • Potential endangered Leatherback turtle nesting tour (dependent on nesting season)
Whitewater Rafting:
The Sarapiqui, Orosi, and the Pejibaye are among the Costa Rican rivers on which our students learn rafting and safety techniques.

San Jose City Tour
Experience San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, and visit the local artisan market where you can purchse handmade gifts such as jewelry and hammocks.

Service Project:
CRROBS integrates a service element into every course. Past projects have included: trail building, painting a school, planting trees, and working with local orphans.

Arrival Information:
After arriving at San Jose International Airport you will be met by Outward Bound staff and transferred to our base, located in the rainforest 15 miles east of the Costa Rican capital, San Jose. On base, you will meet your instructors and be outfitted with a backpack and gear to get ready for your adventure. You will eat and sleep on base before departing to begin your course.
