At the age of 13, Carolyn became a certified SCUBA diver and fell madly in love with the ocean and tropical environments. No one knows how she survived the frigid winters at the University of Michigan, but she moved south soon after graduation. Following the Michigan tradition, she worked as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru as an Environment Volunteer, coordinating mangrove conservation and waste management projects with a local municipal government. After her Peace Corps stint, she came directly to Costa Rica, where she loves beaches surrounded by rainforest and nursing her fierce cereal-eating habit.

Holding a Bachelor’s Degree in buying plane tickets and writing about it, Keltie revels in a life filled with foreign food, adrenaline spurts, and moving house. Formerly the features and marketing intern for The Boston Phoenix and an editorial freelancer at Sherman's Travel Media, Costa Rica is her sixth country of residence. Keltie aspires to work in sustainable tourism and is an advocate of washing and reusing sandwich baggies. She learned how to pitch a tent, apply sunblock and make a fire at a young age, and hopes that Outward Bound will help fine tune these skills.

Darshan Ahluwalia

Darshan is an avid rock climber and adventurer who, unfortunately, can not rock climb due to a recent bad case of metatarsalitis. Having been benched from the climbing walls and following his thirst for adventure, he decided to travel to Costa Rica to join the Outward Bound organization. Prior to making the move to the jungle, Darshan developed his rock and building climbing skills at UCI while studying Computer Engineering. After graduating, he worked with the VoIP group at Cisco-Linksys for two years. Now Darshan is excited to contribute his computer skills to this great organization, while also build his creative skills in photography and graphic design.

Shawn Pendergrass

Education: B.A. in Public Relations and Spanish from Gardner-Webb University

Shawn is a runner, cyclists and aspiring surfer. His other hobbies include reading, saving the world and climbing palm trees. After graduating from Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina in 2005 with a B.A. in Public Relations and Spanish he accepted a teaching position in Costa Rica, having already fallen in love with the majestic beauty of the country while here studying and fulfilling an internship the year prior. He later moved to Micronesia to serve as a US Peace Corps Volunteer, working with youth and community development initiatives. Upon completion of his Peace Corps service, he spent some time in LA working for an advertising agency, but Costa Rica called his name again in the voice of Costa Rica Outward Bound, taking him back to the country he’s come to call home, and giving him the opportunity to share that home with others like you.
